I personally have never been much of a hat person, but since they seem to be back in style and gaining more and more admiration, I’ve decided to give the trend a try. Let’s face it, the fashionable accessory can really spice up an outfit; from drab to fab instantly.
However, in my quest to step out of my comfort zone, I have realized that it takes confidence to wear a hat, especially if you’re not in the habit. While women’s hats have been around for centuries, their popularity tends to come and go with the times.
One style that has made its comeback is the Cloche. Cloche is the French term for bell, thus earning this sleek, sophisticated bell-shaped hat its moniker. It was invented by French milliner, Caroline Reboux in 1908, but didn’t earn its fame until the early 1920’s. The hats were designed very simply with the intent to embellish with brooches, beads, feathers and anything that excited the look. In the 20’s and 30’s, the Cloche interpretation was classy, elegant and formal, but today its casual beauty and simplicity add movement and dimension to an average get-up of rugged jeans and a smart blazer or a basic sweater. And with the current hodgepodge craze of mixing fashions like vintage with modern, classic with trendy, shabby with chic, or rocker with preppy, the comeback Cloche is enough to sassify (if that’s a word) any ordinary ensemble and make you look and feel like a lovely lady.
